Merkel’s center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is leading in the opinion polls for the first round of elections on May 23. The bloc’s candidate is European Commission President-designate Ursula von der Leyen, the center’s candidate.
The anti-European Union far right has also gained strength, including in the heart of Europe. French leader Marine Le Pen is currently in the lead in the polls for the April 23 run-off round, while her new party, the National Rally (formerly known as Front National), has six MEPs in the European Parliament.
With a strong CDU-led European Union entering its eighth consecutive term, there is a sense of consensus that things will continue as before in the EU realm. But if Le Pen and the far-right Euroskeptics win, that consensus is likely to come to an end.
The EU has proven its abilities to deal with crisis in the past — from the euro crisis and the migrant crisis to the recent Brexit mess in Britain. However, so far, the EU has not shown that it can withstand the populist crisis.
