Split a user input to a delimiter and store it in a List

I want to be able to store user input to a list, and then add the list to a text file. I have been trying to do this for awhile now.
I have been trying to search for tutorials and answers, but as you can imagine, I was not able to find one. I would really appreciate any help I can get. Thanks in advance.
void list(){
System.out.println(“Enter your item:”);
Scanner sc = new Scanner(;
String item =;
System.out.println(“Add it to file”);

To take input from the user and then store them in a list you can use Scanner’s nextLine() method.
The example below uses FileWriter to write the List to a file.
import java.util.ArrayList;
import java.util.Scanner;

public class MainClass {

public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
Scanner sc = new Scanner(;
ArrayList list = new ArrayList();
System.out.println(“Enter your item:”);
String item = sc.nextLine();
FileWriter fileWriter = new FileWriter(“items.txt”);
